How To Optimize FAQ Pages For AEO and Featured Snippets

To optimize an FAQ page for AEO and featured snippets, ask the questions customers really ask, put each one in a heading, and answer it in the first two or three sentences below. Keep every answer true on its own, back it with proof from your business, and add FAQPage schema that matches the visible text.

One thing has changed for good. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for any site, so the expandable questions under a listing are gone. The FAQ content still matters, because snippets and AI answers quote clear, self contained answers. This guide covers what still works in 2026.

What happened to FAQ rich results in Google?

Quick Answer

Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for every site on May 7, 2026. In August 2023 it had already limited them to well known, authoritative government and health websites. FAQPage markup is still valid, but it no longer changes how your listing looks in Google.

The first cut came in Google’s August 2023 announcement. FAQ rich results would only show for well known government and health sites, and everyone else would stop seeing them regularly. Google added that unused structured data does not cause problems and has no visible effect, so there was no need to remove it.

The second cut finished the job. Google’s documentation changelog records that the feature would no longer appear in Search starting May 7, 2026, and the FAQ rich result documentation was later removed. If an old guide promises expandable questions under your result, it is out of date.

Why do FAQ pages still help with AEO and featured snippets?

Quick Answer

Because answer engines quote answers, not markup. Featured snippets and AI Overviews pull from the visible text of pages Google has indexed. A clear question followed by a direct answer is one of the easiest things for those systems to find and quote.

Google says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Its featured snippets guide explains that its systems decide whether a page makes a good snippet for a search and then show it. The only controls site owners get are ways to opt out.

AI Overviews and AI Mode work the same way. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI says these features are rooted in its core ranking systems and retrieve pages from the Search index. It also says that from Google’s point of view, optimizing for AI search is still SEO.

So the FAQ page has a new job. It is no longer there to decorate a listing. It is there to hold the best short answer on the web to each question your customers ask. Our overview of answer engine optimization covers the wider strategy.

Which questions should an FAQ page answer?

Quick Answer

The ones customers ask before they buy. Pull them from sales calls, emails, chat logs, and reviews, then check them against People Also Ask and your Search Console queries. Skip questions nobody asks just because they contain a keyword.

  • Your inbox and phone. Write down the questions your team answers every week, in the customer’s own words.
  • People Also Ask. Search your main services and note the questions Google groups under them.
  • Search Console. Look for queries that start with how, what, why, when, cost, or best.
  • Reviews. Customers often mention the worry that almost stopped them from calling.

Google warns against chasing every variation. Its AI guide says that creating content for every way people might search, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses, breaks its scaled content abuse policy. One strong answer beats five thin pages. Good keyword research and an understanding of search intent keep the list focused.

How do you write an FAQ answer that gets quoted?

Quick Answer

Answer the question in the first sentence, then add the detail. Keep the opening to two or three sentences that make sense without the heading. Name the thing, give the answer, and add one specific fact only your business can offer.

A good answer survives being lifted out of the page. If a snippet or an AI Overview shows only your first two sentences, the reader should still get a correct, complete answer.

  • Lead with the answer, not with background or a sales line.
  • Repeat the subject of the question in the answer so it stands alone.
  • Use plain numbers and conditions, such as price ranges, timelines, or service limits, when you can stand behind them.
  • Add what makes your answer different, such as your process, your warranty, or what you see on real jobs.
  • Keep one question per answer and link to a full page when the topic needs more.

Google’s AI guide puts the most weight on valuable, non commodity content with a unique point of view. Generic answers anyone could write are easy to replace. Answers built on your own experience are not. That matters even more if you use AI tools to draft, which we cover in whether AI generated content ranks on Google.

How should an FAQ page be formatted?

Quick Answer

Put each question in a real heading and the answer directly below it, in visible text. Group questions by topic, keep paragraphs short, and use lists or tables where the answer is a set of steps or options.

Google’s guidance on AI features asks for the basics. Allow crawling, keep important content in text, link to key pages internally, and make sure structured data matches what people see. Accordions are fine as long as the answers are in the page HTML.

Google also says you do not need to chunk content into tiny pieces for AI. Short paragraphs are for readers first. They happen to make each answer easier to find and quote. A clean layout like this is part of how we design websites answer engines can cite.

Should you still add FAQ schema in 2026?

Quick Answer

Yes, if the questions and answers are visible on the page and the markup matches them exactly. It no longer earns a rich result, and Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. It still describes the page clearly to any system that reads it.

Google’s AI guide lists overfocusing on structured data as something you can ignore. It says structured data is not required for generative AI search, but that it is still a good idea as part of overall SEO. Google has never said FAQPage markup earns AI citations, and we will not claim it does.

  • Use FAQPage only for questions and answers your business wrote.
  • Use QAPage instead for pages where users submit answers, as Google’s QAPage guidelines explain.
  • Copy the question and answer text into the markup exactly as it appears on the page.
  • Update the markup whenever you edit an answer.
  • Leave existing FAQ markup in place if it is accurate. Google said in 2023 that unused structured data does not cause problems.

How do you measure whether an FAQ page is working?

Quick Answer

Watch Search Console, not the old FAQ report. Track the queries each page shows for, its clicks, and its presence in generative AI features. Then check whether readers move on to a service page or contact you.

  • The Generative AI performance report in Search Console, which Google recommends for measuring visibility in its AI features.
  • Search Console queries phrased as questions, and the pages that show for them.
  • Featured snippets you hold for your main questions, checked by searching them yourself.
  • Clicks from the FAQ page to service pages and the contact form, tracked through web analytics.

Be wary of tools that promise AEO rankings. Google says no third party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. If you serve several towns, connect your FAQs to the work in how to improve your local SEO and how to rank in multiple cities. Our answer engine optimization and content strategy teams build FAQ pages this way.

What else do business owners ask about FAQ pages and AEO?

Does Google still show FAQ rich results?

No. Google limited FAQ rich results to well known government and health sites in August 2023 and stopped showing them for all sites on May 7, 2026. FAQPage markup is still valid, but it no longer changes how a listing looks.

Does FAQ schema help you appear in AI Overviews?

Google says no special schema is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it has not said FAQ markup earns citations. Clear visible answers on an indexed page do the work. Accurate schema can still describe the page.

Should I remove FAQ schema from my site?

No, not if it is accurate. Google has said unused structured data does not cause problems. Remove or fix it only if it no longer matches the questions and answers on the page.

How long should an FAQ answer be?

Start with two or three sentences that fully answer the question, then add detail below if needed. Google publishes no ideal length for snippets or AI answers, so write the shortest answer that is complete and accurate.

Can I mark my content as a featured snippet?

No. Google says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Its systems decide which page makes the best snippet for a search. You can only opt out using the nosnippet or max snippet rules.

What is the difference between FAQPage and QAPage schema?

FAQPage is for questions and answers your business wrote. QAPage is for a page built around one question where users can submit answers, such as a forum thread. Google says not to use QAPage for FAQ pages.

Is AEO different from SEO?

Google treats optimizing for AI search as SEO, because its AI features are built on its core ranking systems. AEO is a useful name for the focus on answers, but the foundations are the same.
