Digital Marketing Expectations for a Startup Company

Startup digital marketing does not begin with a full campaign calendar. It begins with a page that explains the offer, a way to capture the lead, and one channel you can afford to learn on. Companies that expect a mature lead engine in month two usually either quit or blame the channel for a muddy offer.

These are the expectations that hold up. They are less exciting than a launch plan with twelve tactics, and they are the ones that survive contact with a small budget.

Startup Company Digital Marketing Expectations

The first 90 days

  1. Write down who the customer is, what they hire you for, and what a bad lead looks like.
  2. Put that on one page with proof, price range or process, and a form or phone number that reaches a person.
  3. Set up analytics and call tracking so a lead is not a rumor.
  4. Claim the Google Business Profile if you serve a local area.
  5. Pick one paid or outbound test. Not four.

Where the first money should go

Spend first on the page and the tracking. Then spend on the channel closest to intent. For a local service, that is usually Google Search or the map results, not a brand awareness campaign. For a product people do not know to search, a tightly targeted social test can be the teacher. A useful way to split a small budget is in what to do with a marketing budget.

Hold some money back. The first test will be wrong in a specific way, and you need budget left to respond.

Results that are too early to demand

Do not demand a stable cost per lead in week one. Do not demand organic rankings in month one. Search tends to take several months before it is a reliable source. The timeline has its own page, when SEO results are real. Do demand that every lead is recorded, and that someone calls them back the same day.

Signs the marketing is actually working

You can name which channel produced the last ten conversations. The people on those calls match the customer you described. The page is changing because sales heard a repeated objection. Those three are worth more than a traffic chart. Traffic without conversations is a design problem or an offer problem, and more posts will not fix it.

Expect the first quarter to teach you what the offer is. Expect the second to make one channel boring and repeatable. That is a good startup marketing year.
