Google’s Social Search: Changing Search As We Know It

Google LogoGoogle has always tried to provide its users with an all-inclusive search experience to help them gather information as easily as possible; the recent development of Google’s Social Search application is a prime example of this. It reflects how Google has the user experience in mind, and it is sure to have an impact on how we view the importance of social media.

How Does It Work?

How it works: users create a Google Social Search profile and input the accounts that they have on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, FriendFeed or Myspace. Google then creates a list of your social network, which includes your friends and followers from these accounts and incorporates that into your searches. When you use Google to search, your search results will include a section that has images, content and video from your social network. The goal of this application is to create search results that are more relevant to your everyday life.

Instead of just general searching that produces results of a variety of random websites, Google Social Search will compile a list of results that will be more personalized. It’s not designed to improve searches that have more specific answers, like if you were to search “What is the speed of light?”; it’s better for searches that are opinion based like “What would be a good restaurant to take a first date?”. Google will search through your social network, analyze the information that your friends and co-workers have put on their social media pages and generate a series of search results that may help you with your query.

Google’s Goal

The overall goal of Google Social Search is to increase personalized searching. The results that it creates are completely dependent on your Google Social Search profile. The information that you put on your profile and the information that the members of your social network put on theirs influences the effectiveness of this application. Your Social Search results will be mixed in with the search results that are naturally formulated, according to how relevant they are to the topic you have searched.

If you are a business owner, this tool can be used to help keep your company’s name fresh in your existing customer’s minds. All you have to do is make sure your company is represented by an adequately informative page on the most popular social media forums, reach out to your existing customers to make sure they are included on your social network, update your site regularly and let Google do the rest.
