One of the biggest introductions to a healthy lifestyle was the standing desk, encouraging individuals with office jobs to stand while they work instead of sit. But is standing really as good for you as they say?
The Risks of Sitting
According to Cornell University, sitting for more than 1 hour has been shown to induce biochemical changes that lead to fat deposits instead of fat metabolization. This can happen to both those who are healthy and those who are overweight or unhealthy. Over time, this type of sedentary lifestyle can be quite dangerous, and increase the risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, muscle degeneration, and even death.
The Risks of Standing
Standing at work may overall be healthier, but it also comes with some risks. For one, it’s more tiring than sitting (by about 20%) and can therefore be dangerous for older individuals or those with health conditions. It also increases the risk of varicose veins.
Standing Desks in the Workplace
Standing desks are often used by those who work from home, however, some people have incorporated them into their office workspace. When standing desks first became popular, many workers bought and installed their own. As the trend caught on, however, many companies decided to provide them on their own – especially since healthy employees are a benefit to business.
Your Best Bet
If we had to choose between sitting and standing for work, we’d probably choose standing. However, neither is 100% good for you, so our digital marketing company recommends sitting and standing in 20-30 minute increments. These increments will keep your body on its toes and keep your metabolic activity in check.
If you do decide on a standing desk, make sure that it’s at the proper height (your keyboard should be at elbow length) and that your computer screen is tilted at an angle that doesn’t strain your neck. Also make sure you stand up straight and don’t slouch or lean over. If you feel yourself getting tired, sit for a few minutes.
